I did this comic over a year ago at a 24 hour comic day. I went for 12 hours and did 12 pages (instead of the regular 24 pages in 24 hours.) I don't mind working hard but I have a personal policy of always getting enough sleep. I promised Mark Simmons that I'd post it so I'm finally keeping my word. (Mark actually finished 24 pages!)

I've been really busy ever since I moved to New York so I haven't really had time to find people to go sketch with. I also haven't had time to update my blog! Just so you know I still draw, here's some proof of life.

I learned that those circles behind frog's eyes are actually their eardrums.

Gorillas always look really smart when you make eye contact with them.

National Air and Space Museum

The thing I was most excited to see in D.C. was the National Air and Space Museum. Last time I saw it I was 9 but it lived up to my expectations. I also visited the Udvar-Hazy Center. They have a space shuttle, the Enola Gay, and just about every other famous aircraft you can think of. It would take weeks to draw everything they have there. They have hundreds of satellites and planes hanging from the ceiling like Christmas ornaments.

My friend George asked me to try to draw the model with no skin or muscles or tendons or organs, etc... So basically a skeleton. Had some trouble with the feet but I like skeletons in general... as long as they're dead. Otherwise I wish they'd eat more.

Fabric Quickstudies

Our quickstudies workshops are 1,2 and 3 minute poses. It can be challenging to figure out the pose in that amount of time. When the model busts out some fabric I think it makes some people want to quit.

I was getting down to the last pages of the sketchpad so the board was messing up the tone I was putting down. Protip: bring extra paper to put behind the last pages so that doesn't happen.

Dropping in on Glen Orbik's class shifted my attention to lighting. It's a cool approach to break down shadow shapes (something I haven't done in a while.) I usually use compressed charcoal but we used charcoal pencil in that class. I'm pretty bad about sharpening the pencil and these aren't the best photos so the shadows got pretty busy. Sorry about that. Hope you don't find it offensive.

Moscow 38 Preview

I've been working on a comic story that I started a while ago called "Moscow 38." I've decided to abandon radio silence and keep everyone up to date on the project from now on.

So far it looks like it will be about 42 pages. 22 pages are all done at this point. I've been trying to set the bar higher for the quality of my comic work on this project.

I'm not sure how I'm going to distribute this yet. If I have the chance to sell it digitally somehow, I might be willing to try that. Otherwise, when this story is done, I plan to release a book of short comic stories that I've done over the years with this as the main story. There should be a ton of stuff for me to include if I decide to do that.

Solar Reboot

I recently started working on an indie game called Solar Reboot. I started drawing this sweet machine and this worker jumped in and started driving it around! They were working really fast and these things are super maneuverable. I only got one decent one from when it was driving around. The second one is from after he parked it for good.

The moral of the story: If your prey is moving, keep stalking it until it gets tired. You know, komodo dragon style! :)
